The first photograph is of my great-aunt Mary Elizabeth Thomason who worked as a nurse at Earlsdale House, Pontesford, when it was converted to a convalescent home in 1916. The photographs are from her autograph book signed by the convalescing soldiers, a portrait of Aunt ‘Cissy’ as she was known. There are two group shots of the soldiers, one with Nurse Thomason, and two of Earlsdale House. I still have the doll which Aunt Cissy dressed as a fundraiser for the Red Cross; she won first prize for her needlework and was given the doll to keep. It is now treasured as a family heirloom.
