The images here relate to my father, Lance-Corporal J.R. Smith. Having joined up on September 1 1914 he wrote extensively about the movements of C Company, 16th battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He wrote firstly in a journal and then in the diary he was given by the family he was billeted with. In September 1916 he was invalided out of France. The descriptions of the conditions in the trenches which he recorded are both dramatic and shocking.
